For two thousand years one has  cultivated vines in the Gironde estuary. The first recorded owner was \u00c9tienne de Baritault, a lawyer at the court of Aydes de Guienne, who acquired it in the early 18th century. This was a period of unparalleled prosperity in the Bordeaux region.  His granddaughter, the Demoiselle de Beaumalle, and her husband, the Marquis of Rabar, inherited Lisennes in 1758.  Later, Joseph de Rabar sold the estate to Guillaume Bardon, an ennobled bourgeois, and had been a farrier by trade and worked for the gendarmes of the King\u2019s \u201cordinary\u201d guard. At the turn of the century, Bordeaux wine experienced a period of increasing economic prosperity. The chateau was renovated again and took on its present form, a chartreuse. Laporte installed an impressive set of railings and wrought iron gate adorned with his monogram (JL), that still stands today.\nIn the 1850\u2019s some of Bordeaux's wine merchants acquired Lisennes in order to test whether wine traders should invest in land and wine production. The Paris Universal Exposition saw the baptism of the 1855 classification. The Gironde estuary was dotted with vineyards.  Outbuildings for wine called \u201cchais\u201d were common, with their thick walls of crushed stone and their beaten earth floors providing a cool temperature and wine-friendly humidity. Lisennes did not escape this trend.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b16e5c1 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"b16e5c1\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2a8c98f e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"2a8c98f\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6ee91e6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"6ee91e6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"130\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lisennes.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/26.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-2176\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9af3f00 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"9af3f00\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c51d7bd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c51d7bd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"translation-block\">Louis Chasseriaud, who had made his fortune in Pulo Penang, Malaya, bought the property in 1861, grubbing up trees and replacing them with vines.  Mr Chasseriaud then got into financial difficulty in 1876 that resulted into a forced sale and Madame Ducoux, a banker\u2019s wife, then bought the property described at the time as \u201cthe largest, handsomest and best cultivated in Entre-deux-Mers\u201d. William Taylor, an agricultural engineer, acquired it in 1899.  A 23 year old of English origin he had received an inheritance from an American aunt !  This was the first time that there was any mention of the business at the ch\u00e2teau, and a register of production was kept from 1899 to 1925.  Having run the estate for twenty-nine years through WW1 and the depression, William Taylor eventually sold Lisennes to Jean-L\u00e9on Soubie on 31 August 1938.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-736a8d6 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"736a8d6\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9eedf22 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9eedf22\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Soubie Family<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5cd187a e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"5cd187a\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c7abe3d e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"c7abe3d\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-907371e elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"907371e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"334\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lisennes.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/jls.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-2167\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lisennes.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/jls.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.lisennes.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/jls-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7d4b05c e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"7d4b05c\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e8ccac4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e8ccac4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"translation-block\">Jean-L\u00e9on Soubie and his wife, Marie-Gabrielle, acquired 82 hectares of land, a stable, two grey horses, etc. The presence of several existing vats shows that William Taylor was making wine.  For the first time, the Soubie family made its mark on Lisennes !\nIt was just before the outbreak of WW2 and Jean-L\u00e9on Soubie made this purchase to to acquire a substantial holding close to the main population centre of South-Western France. The end of the war marked the start of years of hard toil for Soubie, as he learned to become a grape-grower and wine-maker.  Between 1945 and 1951, he was mayor of Tresses.  Extensive mixed farming was introduced with multi activity \u2013 pork, forestry, wine, diary produce and cereals.  In 1950, Soubie planted 25 hectares of hybrid vines that greatly improved the yield of \u201cvin ordinaire\u201d, followed by some table grapes,  Chasselas and Muscat. The property was expanded in 1955 through the acquisition of two adjacent plots of 7 hectares : \u201cP\u00e9trus\u201d and \u201cBourbon\u201d, both of them being adjacent to the property.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">In 1965, one of Soubie\u2019s two sons, Jean-Pierre (born at Lisennes), and had just returned from his degree in Geology at Nancy and already had a degree in Oenology, managed the property for his father and planted 8 more hectares of apple trees) and built a cold storage facility for the apples.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-df8570c e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"df8570c\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8a19f85 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"8a19f85\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3bec9f3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"3bec9f3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"262\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lisennes.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/frereperesoubie.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-2168\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c29d572 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"c29d572\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-19b8733 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"19b8733\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"translation-block\">In 1972, Jean Pierre inherited Lisennes with his brother Jean-L\u00e9on who died a couple of years later, so Jean-Pierre Soubie became the twelfth owner of the Ch\u00e2teau de Lisennes since \u00c9tienne de Baritault.\nThe involvement of the owners of Lisennes in Tresses continued when Jean-Pierre became a town councillor in 1971 and then was mayor from 1977 to 2012.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">Between 1967 and 1986, Jean-Pierre grubbed up the apple trees and the old hybrid grape varieties, replacing them with noble vinifera vines (Merlot and Cabernets), to turn Lisennes into a high-quality producer.  At the same time, the capacity of the vats was increased and the cold storage converted into a chais. Production increased to 400,000 bottles a year.
